Renters lose money the same three ways, Medical Center included.

It's rarely the wrong apartment. It's a decision made on information that was wrong to begin with.

01

The listing is already gone

Sites keep a unit posted after it's leased. They already got paid for sending you the lead. You find out after the drive, and the application fee doesn't come back.

02

"Two months free" isn't the rent

The advertised number and the number you actually pay over the lease term are two different figures, and the renewal rate is a third. Most renters don't see the gap until the offer letter.

03

The screening answer depends on who answered

Apartment screening is property-specific. Ask for the current written criteria and whether the community accepts a guarantor or another conditional approval option before paying an application fee. A larger deposit does not guarantee approval. We help compare the requirements with the information you share about your rental history.

Compare Daily Routes From Nearby Neighborhoods

The Texas Medical Center sits inside I-610 south, with the METRORail Red Line connecting it to the Museum District and Downtown. Compare the walk to a station, the route to your destination and parking costs from each address. Being close to the campus is not the whole answer.

Shift and residency schedules are a different problem. A 5:30 AM start or a 7 PM handoff at Texas Children's or Baylor College of Medicine doesn't line up neatly with rail frequency. Parking at the campuses varies too. Braeswood and the Museum District edge put you inside a short drive either way. Pearland or the ring just south of the Loop via SH-288 opens up more space per dollar if a longer drive works for you.

Tell Houston Apartment Locators which nearby areas and building types interest you, along with your budget and move date. For a search driven by short rotations, furnished housing or changing work shifts, see our Texas Medical Center page.

Braeswood Garden Apartments to Museum District Mid-Rise

Inventory near the TMC splits two ways. Older garden style apartments sit around Braeswood. Newer mid-rise and high-rise product sits on the Museum District, Rice Village, and Main Street edges. Pricing tracks the Inner Loop; Midtown averaged $1,679 in September 2026 (RentCafe). The closer you sit to the campuses, the tighter availability runs during residency turnover season. Newer communities along Holcombe and Fannin offer resort style pools, fitness centers, and pet friendly policies.

Residency stipend and travel nursing income is the other constant here. Both have the money. Both routinely stall on paperwork, since the income doesn't look like a W-2 salary to a screener. Houston has plenty of rental buildings from before 1990. Older, locally managed communities often have more leeway on approvals.

We track which properties near the TMC accept stipend letters, contract documentation, and travel nursing pay packets, and which want a guarantor instead. You hear what we've learned before you pay an application fee.

Medical Center questions

Where should I look for an apartment near the Texas Medical Center?

That depends on your shift pattern and how much commute you'll trade for space. Braeswood and the Museum District edge sit closest to the TMC campuses. Rice Village and the mid-rise communities next to Hermann Park offer walkable options. The ring just south of I-610 toward Pearland via SH-288 opens up more square footage per dollar. We compare all three against your actual schedule.

Will properties near the TMC accept residency stipend income?

Some do with the right documentation, and some want a guarantor program like TheGuarantors instead. Before you spend an application fee, we share which communities have said they accept stipend letters and contract income. We don't promise approval, but you'll know where you stand.

Is the METRORail Red Line worth living near for a TMC commute?

For a fixed day shift at MD Anderson, Memorial Hermann, or Houston Methodist, often yes. The Red Line runs from Downtown through Midtown and the Museum District straight into the TMC. For early starts and late handoffs, the drive usually wins. Our free commute tool shows drive and transit times for your own schedule.

Can you help with a short residency rotation near the Medical Center?

Yes. Short term and furnished apartments exist near the TMC, at a premium. We compare furnished options against a standard lease on total cost so you're not paying for flexibility you don't need.

Can I afford an apartment near the Medical Center making $2,000 a month?

Most Houston communities require gross monthly income of 3x the rent. At $2,000 a month that qualifies you for apartments up to about $667 in rent, which is below the TMC corridor average. Older garden style communities in Braeswood and south of I-610 carry the lowest price points in this area. We send you dated rent ranges so you know exactly where you stand before applying.

Can I get an apartment with a low credit score?

Houston's older, locally managed buildings approve more renters than most expect. A lot of the city's apartments went up before 1990, and managers on site at those communities often have real leeway. We pass along what we've learned about each community's screening criteria before you spend an application fee. We don't promise approval, but you'll know where you stand first.

How fast can I move into an apartment near the Medical Center?

We reply the same day you text, and the list usually follows in a day or two. Application processing varies by community. Some answer in a day or two, and others take up to a week. If you're relocating for a residency start date, tell us when you need keys. We'll build the list with that date in mind.

Is there a free apartment locator near me in the Medical Center area?

Houston Apartment Locators covers every pocket around the TMC. That means Braeswood, Museum District, Rice Village, Hermann Park, Third Ward, and the ring south of I-610 toward Pearland. Share your budget and move date and we'll send a list matched to your needs, usually in a day or two.
